Piano Piano lessons at Company 'N Tempo are offered in private format only, and are appropriate for students aged 7 through 107! Lessons are one-half hour in length for beginning and intermediate students, and one hour in length for more advanced students. Students learn proper finger technique, rhythm, music theory, music history, and expression. Exercises include major scales, arpeggios, and exercises from Hanon's The Virtuoso Pianist. Beginning students learn pieces from the John Schaum or John Thompson method series, beginning with the Pre-A book. Intermediate and advanced students are introduced to a wide repertoire of pieces. While a strong background in classical music is emphasized, students are encouraged to play pieces of varying styles, including but not limited to jazz, ragtime, top 40 hits, and Broadway show tunes. Lessons are individually tailored to meet students' musical interests and educational needs, and each student progresses at his or her own pace. Beginning students are required to practice at home at least 20 minutes per day, 6 days per week. As the student progresses to an intermediate level and begins to learn more lengthy and difficult pieces, the required practice time increases to 30 minutes or more per day. Students are required to have regular access to a keyboard on which to practice. A piano is preferable for beginners, although a larger electronic keyboard may be used early on. Intermediate and advanced students must practice on a piano or a keyboard with a piano-like touch such as a Klavinova.
